No doubt persecution and suffering are an integral part of Christian life. But Christ, himself, suffers with us when we go through these testing times. He does not leave us alone (Mt 25:40).
He has a reason for every suffering that is from his will. Many Saints suffered: St Therese had a nervous disorder for most of her life and then tuberculosis till the last moments of her life; St Alphonsa had a psychological disorder. These are only to name a few.
But God worked in their life even amidst this. He made their life pleasant enough to carry out all his will in their lives. His yoke is easy and the burden is light (Mt 11:30).
